The Relative Difficulty of French Vowel Contrasts for Native Speakers of English

Whilst most teachers and learners of French are able to state which vowel contrasts are difficult for L1 English speakers, little empirical work has been carried out to test this. A short study is described which attempted to clarify this issue. The use to which the results are to be put is then discussed.
