Pharyngealization across Arabic dialects revisited

This talk summarizes preliminary results from a pilot study we have carried out on pharyngealization across two Arabic dialects, i.e. Egyptian, and Libyan Arabic. Our carefully controlled acoustic data show that the domain of pharyngealization is larger than previously thought i.e. syllable in EA (Broselow 1976) and word in Libyan Arabic (Ghazeli 1977). This means that the scope and domain of pharyngealization in the different dialects of Arabic remain unclear and still need further research.
