Study Here

The Language Evolution and Computation Research Unit runs a Postgraduate Programme in the Evolution of Language and Cognition. Through this programme students can study for the degree of MSc/Dip or PhD. It is expected that many MSc students will go on to work for a PhD here, but it is perfectly possible to apply to enter the PhD programme directly, or to apply for the MSc without necessarily intending to continue towards the PhD.

If you are bright, fascinated by what it is that makes us human, willing to work very hard, and keen to explore new areas of study, then we want to hear from you – you could be an ideal candidate for the MSc course. Furthermore, if you have demonstrated an ability to carry out independent study and have an idea for a research project, then you should consider applying for a PhD.

Before contacting the LEC, prospective students are encouraged to read the information online on the postgraduate programme website, as well as information provided by the school.

The LEC is unique in the world in providing access to such a large group of experts in the field of language, evolution, cognition, and computational modelling. Within the LEC we have a large research group, but at Edinburgh we also situated right in the heart of one of the biggest group of researchers looking at language anywhere. This, in addition to being in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, make the LEC a great place to study.
