Programme Aims
The major aims of the MSc/Dip English Language are:
- to offer students tuition in the key areas of the study of the structure of the language: phonology, syntax and semantics (with other areas available as option courses)
- to offer students a variety of optional courses relating to aspects of the study of English in the modern period (including courses which focus on non-standard varieties) and to aspects of the study of stages in the historical development of the language
- to equip students with the knowledge and expertise for advanced research into English Language, both at this level and for possible use in pursuit of a higher research degree, while also meeting the requirements of graduates who wish to further their understanding of the English Language but are not committed to research careers.
