Syntactic native language attrition in near-native second language speakers

An 18-month project (February 2001 - August 2002), funded by ESRC, investigating the changes occurring in the native language syntax of highly profiient second language speakers who began acquiring the second language in adulthood. The subjects were native speakers of Greek and Italian; the specific hypothesis tested was that "interpretable" syntactic features (those which make an essential contribution to meaning) are more vulnerable to attrition than non-interpretable features (those relevant only to the morphosyntax).
