The sound files in this directory illustrate the stimuli used in the experiment reported in C. Caldwell-Harris et al. (2015), 'Factors influencing sensitivity to tone in an artificial language: Implications for second language learning' (Studies in Second Language Acquisition vol. 37 no. 2). Because certain browsers will not play .wav files, the in-text links below are actually to .mp3 files. Readers who wish to download any of the sound files are advised to exit this read-me file, return to the index, and download the .wav files from the WAV directory there.

The file training-excerpt is an approximately 20-second sample of the material to which participants were exposed during the training phase.

The remaining files are based on one of the 'words' of the artificial language, namely pacóti.

The file sound_pacoti_MHM is the word itself.

The file sound_pacoti_MLM is the same string of consonants and vowels, but with the 'wrong' (low) tone on the middle syllable (i.e. pacòti), which is a nonword in the artificial language.

The file sound_pacoti_pair1 illustrates the two forms in sequence, in the order pacótipacòti (i.e. word – nonword).

The file sound_pacoti_pair2 illustrates the same two forms in the opposite order pacòtipacóti (i.e. nonword – word).
