In a survey of 21 postgraduate staff from 14 Edinburgh University departments, respondents expressed their views on plagiarism in the academic writing of non-native speakers and related their experience in dealing with such plagiarism when it occurred. This in-progress report summarises these views and suggests some possible preliminary generalisations. Although the views of staff varied widely, for those staff who had encountered plagiarism in the writing of their non-native speaker students, the common thread seemed to be the borderline English academic writing proficiency of the student.
