Do you pronounce the words Pam and palm the same?

This map presents preliminary results for the question Do you pronounce the words Pam and palm the same?
  • Red dots indicate the response Always/usually
  • Pink dots indicate the response Sometimes
  • Grey dots indicate the response Never/rarely
  • In cases where more than one response was received from a location, pink dots may also indicate that different responses were returned.

This map shows that responses indicating that Pam and palm are pronounced the same are typical of Scotland and (Northern) Ireland, and are almost entirely absent from England and Wales. This fits with the description of the 'TRAP-PALM Merger' in Wells (1982: 129-130), and it is worth noting that the rash of pink dots in the Scottish central belt suggests that the merger is not complete even in its heartland.
