Consonant Maps

This page provides links to maps illustrating the distribution of consonantal features in locations in the EPED. There are two types of consonantal map in this online atlas. Single word maps illustrate the distribution of linguistic features in only one word across EPED locations. Variation maps illustrate the distribution of linguistic features in groups of words across the EPED locations. The number of categories on variation maps depends on the number of tokens involved. In cases where only a small number of tokens is available, broad categories such as 'present', 'variably present' and 'absent' are used. Where more tokens are available, finer categories are employed (e.g. absent, 1-25% present, 25-50% present, 51-75% present, 76-100% present, etc.).  Each page contains a brief statement of the feature(s) being mapped, the map itself, the sources of the data on which it is based, and a discussion of the patterns revealed in the map, especially in comparison with the results of later surveys such as the Survey of English Dialects and the Linguistic Atlas of Scotland.
