Vowel in the word down This map shows the development of ME /uː/ in the word down. ■ = high monophthongs and diphthongs, e.g. [uː], [ʊu], [əuː], [oʊ] ● = low and low-mid monophthongs and centring diphthongs, e.g. [aː], [æː], [ɛː], [aə], [æə], [ɛə] ▲ = [aɪ] ◆ = diphthongs with fronted nuclei, e.g. [œʊ], [œʏ] + = other, e.g. [aʊ], [ʌʊ], [æʊ], [ɛʊ] dt.
