Pronunciation of elm This map shows the distribution of pronunciations of elm with an epenthetic schwa between the /l/ and the /m/. Only data from the (c)wl. is available, and the pronunciation of the word was not recorded at many locations. Data for Belfast and Cork are from Ellis (1869: 1241). ● = epenthesis present; ● = epenthesis absent (c)wl.
- 272.
Cf. SED IV.10.4. Although the map doesn't reveal any striking pattern (partly because of the sparseness of the data), the widespread occurrence of epenthesis in /lm/ across Britain is noteworthy. |
