Conference Details

The Linguistics and English Language Postgraduate Conference is an annual event hosted by the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. The conference offers postgraduate students the opportunity to present ongoing work and discuss their research with peers and faculty. This year’s conference will be held on 1st–3rd June 2016.

Running for over 20 years, the conference offers a great opportunity to refine thoughts, share concerns, and receive constructive criticism in a supportive and convivial environment. Additionally, it’s a great way to gain experience in conference presentation and find out about some of the exciting things going on in the field. Attendance at the conference is free.

Submissions are invited for oral presentations and posters. Any papers relevant to Linguistics and English Language are welcome. The submission deadline has been extended to 8th April 2016.

Plenary speakers

Dr Josef Fruehwald and Prof. Antonella Sorace will be giving the plenary lectures at the 2016 conference. More details to follow.

Workshops

On the first morning of the conference, we will be running three workshops. These are primarily aimed at MSc students, but are open to everyone. In the first, a panel of PhD students will talk about their experiences of the MSc dissertation process. For the second workshop, we are pleased to welcome Chris Tancock, Senior Publisher of Elsevier’s Linguistics and English Language journals, for a talk entitled “An Introduction to Writing in Academic Journals: How to Get Published”. Finally, Dr Mits Ota will be talking about how to choose the right statistical tests for your research and data.

Social events

We have social events planned for each evening of the conference. This will include a conference dinner on the Wednesday (at Ox184), a BBQ in the Meadows on the Thursday (bbqs provided, bring your own food), and a wine reception followed by pub evening on the Friday. Don’t forget to indicate which events you would like to attend when you register.

Prizes

Courtesy of Elsevier, we will be awarding three prizes for the best presentations, as voted for by the conference audiences.

Conference delegates will each be asked to choose their favourite presenter based on content, clarity and style of presentation, quality of materials, etc. The winners will be those with the most votes. Even more incentive to make your presentations great!

Registration

Registration for the conference and social events is now closed. If you have registered, you can pick up your conference pack outside 3.10/3.11 Dugald Stewart Building from 11.15–12.00 on Wednesday 1st June.
